Description: This class focuses on reading comprehension, main ideas and details, and 5 W's (who, what, when, where, and why). It also covers vocabulary, compare and contrast, and writing skills.
SE Job‐O - 06880

Prerequisite: Age 16 or older
Description: This course is taken in conjunction with Special Education Work Experience. Students enrolled in this course are generally also receiving credit for the on‐job‐training. Classroom topics include mock interview situations, completing job applications, reading paycheck stubs, figuring tax forms and reductions, vocabulary pertaining to the working world, interest inventories, reading and answering part‐time and full‐time classified ads, sample application letters, personal grooming, and work habits. SE work experience credit for on the job training. It is recommended to have a teacher referral to take this course.

Description: Students will be presented with the first half of the Algebra 1 curriculum. Topics are aligned with Common Core standards and include solving linear equations and inequalities and their functions, graphing linear equations and solving systems of equations and inequalities.

XC Geometry Concepts - 06440

Description: This course introduces a variety of new geometric concepts and vocabulary while incorporating prior algebraic knowledge. Students will learn the basic tools of geometry that will be used throughout the course. Students will work with the properties of lines, including parallel and perpendicular, triangles, quadrilaterals similarity, right angle trigonometry, transformations, and circles. Students will practice problem-solving techniques with a variety of real world problems. Stress will be placed upon the Common Core standards, the importance of students being able to use precise mathematical terminology, and the importance of being able to use both exact measures and rational approximations.

Description: This course is a one semester course that is offered to juniors and seniors; it is required for graduation. The content of the course includes the study of early forms of government, the impact of political parties, and the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of our national and state governments. Other topics covered include the requirements for voting in Illinois and duties and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. Students will be required to pass the Illinois and Federal Constitution tests.

Description: Special Education students will be introduced to and discuss money management, various types of insurance, banking practices, and consumer protection. The course introduces the students to advertising, housing, transportation, clothing, nutrition, and comparison shopping skills. 9th graders will be offered this course only if there is availability. Priority is given to 10, 11, and 12th grade students.

Description: XC Geography course provides students with an overview of world geography, but may vary widely in the topics they cover. Students will be introduced to the basic understanding of maps including but not limited to:
legends/keys, scale, latitude and longitude, and cardinal directions. Students learn to read and interpret basic tables and are able to present information learned in different manners. They can also expect to get a basic understanding of the Solar System, locations of the continents and oceans, inner and outer layers of the earth, tectonic plates and boundary movements, and major landforms. World Geography covers the Western Hemisphere. These areas of study include: North American, South America, Central America, etc. The five themes of geography are also integrated into this course.

Description: The subject matter in this course will examine topics in general Physical Science and Chemistry. Lecture presentations, group and individualized projects and reports, videos, vocabulary, hands on activities, and current events will be used to assist students in understanding the information presented. Math and Algebra as well as graphing are used to reinforce topics presented. First semester is an introduction to Physical Science, and the second semester is an introduction to Chemistry.

Description: For reading comprehension, students will be given both fiction and non-fiction books to read as a group. Comprehension will be measured in short answer and multiple choice format. Some of these readings will be vocational based. For written expression, students will practice the eight parts of speech and will have daily writing classwork to assist them in developing their writing skills. Students will get practice in filling out a job application and creating a resume. Students will work on vocabulary based instructional units. Students will be asked to use the vocabulary in many different ways and will have multiple opportunities to practice using the vocabulary in class.
XC Tech Prep English 4 – 06372

Description: For reading comprehension, students will be given short stories and chapter books to read as a group. After reading chapter books, student assessments will include: Supporting Details, Main Ideas, Vocabulary, Conclusion, and Short Answers. For written expression, students will have an ongoing practice with the 8 parts of speech. After each section, students will practice writing exercises to help strengthen their understanding of terms and their meanings. Students will read short stories, do journaling, and research papers to write. Students will be given a new vocabulary word daily with their bell ringer. Students will practice writing sentences using the words correctly.
