Description: Studio in Art is designed to provide a foundation for advanced art courses. Emphasis is placed on understanding the Elements of Art and Principles of Design as a basis for composition. Students will explore a variety of artists, art processes and materials such as drawing, painting, printmaking, two & three-dimensional design, and digital art. Student artwork will reflect aesthetics & cultural and historical contexts. Willingness to get involved in the creative process is a more important requirement than the student’s talent or previous experience.

Description: No experience in the history of art is assumed for those students who take the course. Students who have done well in other courses in the humanities, such as history and literature, or in any of the studio arts are especially encouraged to enroll. Students will examine major forms of artistic expression from a variety of cultures, past and present. They learn to look at works of art critically, with intelligence and sensitivity, and to analyze what they see. Student projects will include writing, critical thinking and hands-on activities. Various field trips to art/historical sites are included. (Textbook Janson). Studio Fee is $25.00. Fee waivers available based on need.

Ceramics - 00310

Prerequisite: Successful completion of semester 1 is a prerequisite for semester 2.


Description: This course is designed with the beginning pottery and sculpture student in mind, with experiences in different forms. A student will produce projects using basic hand building methods of forming clay with pinch, coil, and slab techniques. The student will be actively involved in three‐dimensional construction using clay as the primary media. Creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking skills are used by the student for the purpose of creating their “own” artwork. The aesthetics, criticism, and history of pottery and sculpture are explored as well. Lab Fee is $25.00. Fee waivers available based on need.

Advanced Ceramics – 00320 & 00330

Prerequisite: “B” average in Ceramics; Successful completion of semester 1 is a prerequisite for semester 2


Description: This course is designed to continue developing skills in functional pottery and three‐dimensional sculpture. Students will explore more complex methods of hand‐building and forming techniques, as well as throwing on the potter’s wheel. The course is also designed to further develop the student’s creativity, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Clay is the primary media used in this class. Emphasis is placed on quality artwork and craftsmanship. Glazing and finishing techniques will be explored in depth. The aesthetics, criticism, and history of ceramics are explored. Lab Fee is $25.00. Fee waivers available based on need.


Studio Art 1A - 00130

Description: This course is designed to introduce students to basic studio art methods such as drawing with graphite, charcoal, color pencil and oil pastel as well as basic painting and color mixing techniques. Students will study the use of perspective, the use of dark and light, the fundamentals of color, composition and shape and form by learning to represent objects, buildings, landscapes and portraits. Emphasis will be placed on developing skills through the elements of art. This course would benefit students seriously interested in the fine arts. Lab Fee is $25.00. Fee waivers available based on need. A Sketchbook is required.

Studio Art 1B - 00140

Description: This course is designed to introduce students to basic composition and design in drawing and painting through the study of famous artists, techniques and famous works of art. Students will create original works in the style of various artists and their master works as well as observing from life. Students will use a variety of drawing and painting media. Emphasis will be placed on developing basic skills through the principles of design. This course would benefit students seriously interested in the fine arts. Lab Fee is $25.00. Advanced Drawing and Painting – 00160 & 00170

Grades: 10, 11, 12 Length: 2 Semesters Credits: 1

Prerequisite: Successful completion of semester 1 is prerequisite for semester 2.


Description: This course is designed for the students who want to increase and refine skills and techniques in drawing and painting. First semester students will sketch and develop by working with everyday objects, studies of animals, people, and arrangements in cloth and still life. Second semester projects will include quick sketches and finished drawings of the human body. Students will paint portraits and murals in the second semester. Lab Fee is $25.00. Fee waivers available based on need.

Independent Projects - 00180

Grades: 11, 12 Length: 1 or 2 Semesters Credits: ½

Prerequisite: Previous class works in the selected area. Students must have the teacher's signature before registering for the class.


Description: This course is offered in the following areas of the art curriculum: Advanced Ceramics, Advanced Photography and Advanced Drawing and Painting. Students must have demonstrated a certain amount of skill in the particular area they are selecting. Emphasis will be on experimentation in a specific medium or combination of media. The direction of Independent Projects is mutually planned between the student and the teacher. Lab Fee is $25.00. Fee waivers available based on need.
