Description: In the introductory course of the PLTW Biomedical Science program, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems. Materials required include a 3 ring binder, notebook and Chromebook. It is highly recommended to have an A or a B in previous science courses, such as 8th grade Science or Biology 1, prior to taking this course. This course is a difficult pathway and students should be mindful of previous science grades prior to taking this course.

Description: Students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on MANIKEN® skeletal models; use data acquisition software to monitor body functions, such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration; and take on the roles of biomedical professionals to solve real-world medical cases. Materials required include 3 ring binder, notebook and Chromebook. It is recommended to have an interest in a health career to take this course.

Description: Students follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Students explore how to detect and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through cases, students learn about a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics. Materials required: 3 ring binder, notebook and Chromebook.

State Name: Health Occupations 1
Description: This course is held at Lewis and Clark Community College. Schedules and hours are determined by LCCC. This course provides Basic Nurse Assistant instruction through theory, lab, and six mandatory 8-hour clinical days outside of the regular scheduled class sessions (dates/times to be arranged). Teaches the nursing assistant to function as an effective member of the nursing team in the delivery of patient care, under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional or Licensed Practical Nurse in hospitals, nursing homes, and home healthcare settings. Adequate time is utilized in orienting the student to the work environment and responsibilities in order to provide a basis for quality patient care and team morale. Successful completers qualify for the Illinois Nurse Assistant Competency Examination. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) requires that all Nurse Assistant students have a live scan (fingerprint) criminal background check. The college will make arrangements for an IDPH approved vendor to do this on campus. There is a fee for this service, which will be payable the day of the live scan. There will be an orientation prior to the class start date to discuss this as well as other class requirements. Attendance at the orientation is mandatory. Students who have questions or a criminal background should contact the Coordinator of the Nurse Assistant Program for more information on determining their eligibility for the program or their ability to complete the program. There are additional fees associated with this course. Students must have their own transportation for clinicals.
